Highlights can be done with natural colors or using unnatural ones. These highlights can be permanent, semi-permanent, semi-permanent and temporary. The permanent form is when hair is lightened making use of bleach.
There are several pictures of dark brown hair with highlights giving an idea as to what all colors can go along very well if the natural hair color is dark brown. Hair highlights also depends on the length of the hair. If the hair is long and little wavy, then the front and a few patched of strands on the back can be streaked with a lighter shades like golden brown or bleached.
Other colors like white, shades of blue, pink, purple, copper etc. can also be used. All these shades can be used as a mix with separated strands being colored with a different color.

Highlights for Black Hair 2013
Ombré hair color has been popping up on red carpets for more than a year and is a great color option for brunettes. Dip-dye hair color has seen no signs of flagging in popularity in 2013. Not just a trend for teens, dip-dye color -- in which the ends are dipped in color, while the rest of the hair is left natural -- is popping up on women (and men!) of all ages.
Bronde or "brown blonde" is that perfect shade between blonde and brunette that was first made popular back in 2007 by supermodel Gisele Bundchen and remains popular into 2013. Bright hues including streaks, washes of pastels, Kool-Aid hair color and more.
